LITERACY

READING

  • Continue to read your word books.
  • Read and write the following high frequency words on your blank word grid or in your Literacy book:to, was, the, he / she.
  • Continue to read Big Cat reading books.  On P1 homepage click on link to Collins Big Cat.

     Log-in details:

     Username: parents@harpercollins.co.uk

     Password: Parents20!

  • Remember to use ‘Inference’ when discussing books with an adult. Plus, the adult helping you with your reading can use ‘Guided Reading Questions: Level 1’ / ‘Reading Strategies’ in your Pupil Support Book.

  • Continue to focus on recognising the difference between a letter, a word and a sentence plus recognising the difference between a line of writing and a sentence. Plus, can you retell your stories from start to finish in your own words?

LETTERS / SOUNDS

  • Sing your alphabet.
  • On P1 homepage click on Useful Links to access ‘Starfall’ ‘Letter Formation’ / ‘Jolly Phonics’ websites to reinforce ALL letter formation, letter sounds and words from a-z.

NEW SOUND: ch

Explain to your child that even though there are two letters, there is only one sound. When two letters make one sound, it is called a ‘digraph’

Check out the following link:

https://www.starfall.com/h/ltr-lv-i/ch-skill/?t=292165964

  • Use your finger to write ch in the air.
  • Use your finger to write ch on someones back.
  • If you have paint at home, paint the letters, try to join them!
  • When you go outside to play try to write ‘ch’ with chalk or gather some small stones, twigs and sticks / then make the letters. Take some photos!
  • Use your plain whiteboard/grid to practise writing the letters c, h / ch joined. Take a different day to write each one. Monday 'c', Tuesday, 'h', Wednesday 'ch'. Say the letter name and the sound as you write, e.g. c says cuh.
  • Find words beginning with ‘ch’ in your picture dictionary. In your Literacy book draw and label three pictures for example ‘chips’ ‘chair’ ‘cheese’ ‘chicken’ ‘chimpanzee’. Write simple sentences to go with your pictures. Use the key words 'Here is a....'. or ‘I can see a ….’ or ‘I like to eat….’  Examples - Here is a chicken. I can see a chair. This term we learn to add simple ‘connectives’ to our sentences. We will focus on using ‘and’ for a number of weeks. Maybe you could write a longer sentence using this connecting word, for example, ‘I like to eat chicken and chips’. ‘I can see a chicken and a chimpanzee’. Remember to start each sentence with a capital letter, use finger spaces between each word and finish with a full stop. Read your sentences to an adult. Give yourself a star!

SOUNDS, WORDS AND PICTURES

    •    Check your homework pack for the sheet containing the letter sounds 'c e h r m d'.

  •    Cut these up, plus the words and pictures to match. Keep the rest of your sounds etc, for future weeks.

    •    If possible stick the sounds, words and pictures onto card but don't worry if you can't.

    •    Play the following games: (on different days of the week)

    •    Set out the 6 letter sounds and 6 picture cards. Adult to say the sound. Child to find the sound and match to

         appropriate picture.

    •    Set out the 6 letter sounds and 6 words. Adult to read the word. Child to find the initial sound and match to

         the word.

    •    Set out all the letter sounds, words and pictures. Child to attempt to read words and match to pictures and

         initial sounds.

    •    Pairs Game 1 - Set the 6 letter sounds and 6 picture cards upside down on the table in two different piles.

Choose a sound card and a picture card to see if they match. Continue until all cards used.

    •    Pairs Game 2 -  Set the 6 letter sounds and 6 word cards upside down on the table in two different piles.

Choose a sound card and a word card to see if they match. Continue until all cards used.

    •    Pairs Game 3 -  Set the 6 letter sounds, 6 picture cards and the 6 word cards upside down on the table in

three different piles. Choose a sound card, a picture card and a word card to see if they match. Continue

         until all cards used.

         Give yourself another star!

PLEASE KEEP YOUR CARDS SAFE. YOU WILL NEED THEM FOR FUTURE TASKS. THANK YOU.

LINKS TO WAU

Learn the poem ‘Dinosaur Egg’ until you know it ‘off by heart’. Talk about the rhyming words.

DINOSAUR EGG

Inside her egg shell,

white and round,

Baby dino is safe and sound.

But she wants to come out

into the light,

So she pushes and shoves

with all her might.

Her shell soon cracks and

creaks and pops,

One big jump

and out she hops!

Please see below for a selection of activities. No need to print the worksheets. Thank you.
