P1 WAU - Winter

Week 9

Continue to observe the weather. This is our final week on the Arctic. Next week when you are back at school I’m going to let you choose our new topic – we will use a voting system!

INUIT PEOPLE

Look at the links below to find out more information about the Arctic and the people that live there. Compare their lifestyle to yours. What is similar? What is different? They have igloos. Try to make your own igloo over the course of the week. I’m going to try to make one with sugar cubes! Have fun!laugh

Week 8

This week, continue to observe the weather and look for signs of winter. Depending on what weather we get, try any of the following: walk in the rain, jump in puddles, use a magnifying glass to look at raindrops, frost, ice, sleet, make snowmen, snowballs and make marks in the frost and the snow.

THE POLAR BEAR

This week we are learning about one of my favourite animals, the Polar Bear. Check out the links below.  Draw a polar bear and write one interesting fact about it. I would love it if you would send in a photograph of your work. Try to learn the rhyme 'Little Polar Bear' until you know it off by heart.

International Polar Bear Day is on Saturday 27th February 2021!

I invite you to join me in making it an extra-special day for polar bears by taking part in a Thermostat Challenge.

It's simple: by turning your heating down a little to burn less oil, you are reducing global warming and the polar bears ice homes won’t melt as fast.

Other things you can do:

  • Use energy saving light bulbs.
  • Take a shower instead of a bath.
  • Add insulation to reduce your energy consumption throughout the year and then you don’t need your central heating on as much.
  • Cycle or walk to the shop, if possible.

Ask an adult to talk to you about the challenges polar bears face in a changing Arctic and the part each of us can play in stopping global warming.

I’ve added a few extra links below that an adult can explain to you in a simpler form.  Maybe you could design a poster to encourage people to help to save the polar bears.

  • Look at the different types of Polar Bear creations below. We are learning to be creative.
  • Try to make one over the course of the week.

Week 7 MID-TERM BREAK

This week, continue to observe the weather and look for signs of winter. Depending on what weather we get, try any of the following: walk in the rain, jump in puddles, use a magnifying glass to look at raindrops, frost, ice, make snowmen, snowballs and make marks in the frost and the snow.

Week 6

  • Talk about the frost, what it looks like, feels like; the patterns its makes.
  • Go outside and explore – be careful!
  • Check out the links below.

BIG GARDEN BIRDWATCH

  • The Big Garden Birdwatch will take place from 29th -31st January.
  • Remember to count the birds you see in your garden for one hour between those dates. I’ve included a sheet for you to use. Remember to count the most birds you see at any one time.

  • Talk about the wind, what it feels like; we can't see it but we can see what it does to things. If we have some wind this week try to do the following
  • Go outside, stand very still, close your eyes, listen. What do you notice? Open your eyes. What do you see?
  • Try ONE of the wind crafts below (there's also a rain activity in the link about 'Weather station craft instructions').

P.S. I made a snowman and tried out the rain cloud in a jar experiment!

Depending on what weather we get, try any of the following: walk in the rain, jump in puddles, use a magnifying glass to look at ice, make more snowmen, snowballs and make marks in the frost. A little girl in our class told me on Friday that Elsa made the frost last week, not Jack Frost! What do you think? laugh

I didn’t get a chance to make my rain cloud in a jar but I’m going to try this week.

SNOW

  • watch this short video on ‘Why does it snow? https://youtu.be/oZGS23QOLQU

  • Try to design your own winter clothes.
  • Try to make some paper snowflakes. Use these instructions.
  • Look at the different types of snowmen. We are learning to be creative. Try to make one over the course of the week.

Week 1

Our new topic is 'Winter'.

Click on the link below to talk about signs of Winter.

As part of our winter topic we will be looking at weather. Over the Christmas period we had wind, rain, snow and frost. Look at the weather over the course of this week, especially when you are out for a walk - what do you notice?

Rain

To link with our Literacy (sound 'r') we will be learning to recite the poem 'Raindrops'. Talk about rain / rain clouds and try to find out what makes it rain. I've included a little science experiment below on how to make your own rain cloud in a jar. Don't worry if you can't get blue food colouring, any colour will do. I'm going to have a go myself! Have fun.laugh

Check out this video on ‘What is rain?’  https://youtu.be/oZGS23QOLQU
